Little Raphaëlle (daughter of Nathalie Blaquière) offers a bouquet as a
token of appreciation to Denise Haché, Director of Student Services and
Recruitment, who represents the members of the university community
and the volunteers who offered their aid during the ice storm.
“The Shippagan campus showed
tremendous generosity by opening
its doors wide to victims from across
the Acadian Peninsula,” said Ms.
Blaquière. “There was an incomparable
atmosphere of cooperation and under-
standing. It was reassuring to be so well
supported and to feel safe. Everything
was so well organized and done
professionally. The Shippagan campus
truly demonstrated that it was there
for the entire community, without
exception.”
From January 25 to 30, approximately
5000 meals were served at the campus
cafeteria. The centre welcomed those
who did not want to leave their homes,
but who were looking for a place to warm
up and eat a hot meal during the day.
With support from the Red Cross,
classrooms on the third floor of the
university building were fitted out,
depending on the type of clientele,
to allow approximately 80 people
per night to sleep in a safe bed.
The offices normally occupied by
Student Services were transformed
into an infirmary to accommodate
about a dozen residents from a nursing
home in the area. They even benefited
from the care of professors, clinical
instructors and students from the
nursing science program at the Bathurst
site who came to help.
The campus gymnasium was also
transformed into a dormitory for a
few days to accommodate some
40 New Brunswick Power lineworkers.
Throughout the crisis, the Shippagan
campus demonstrated that, beyond its
mandate of post-secondary education,
it is also a key player with deep roots in
its community.
