Lifesaving Courses

Bronze Star

This program is for youth aged 9 to 12 who have completed level 10 of the Canadian Red Cross Junior Swimming program. Saving a life is a very interesting challenge for young lifeguards. Our mission is to provide them with training that will enable them to rescue a person in danger.

Bronze Medallion

To take this course, you must be 13 years of age or older or have completed the Bronze Star. The Bronze Medallion certificate allows candidates to gain an understanding of key rescue training principles, including judgment, knowledge, skills, and physical fitness. Lifeguards learn towing, carrying, and clearing techniques to be able to handle rescue situations with a significant risk element.

They also learn to intervene in more complex situations involving conscious and unconscious victims suffering from airway obstruction. They improve the effectiveness of their swimming techniques and their endurance in timed trials.

Bronze Cross (and Emergency First Aid)

To take this course, you must hold the Bronze Medallion certificate. The Bronze Cross certificate is aimed at lifeguards seeking more advanced training and wanting to acquire basic knowledge in aquatic facility supervision.

Candidates will learn the difference between rescue and surveillance, basic principles of emergency procedures, and teamwork. Lifeguards will learn to assist a victim with a spinal injury and a victim in cardiac arrest.

National Lifeguard - Pool (and General First Aid)

To take this course, you must be 16 years of age or older and hold the Bronze Cross certificate. The National Lifeguard (NL) course is recognized as the standard for lifeguard performance in Canada. The training provided in the NL course is designed to develop a thorough understanding of surveillance principles, good judgment, and a responsible attitude towards the role of the lifeguard.

The primary role of the NL lifeguard is to ensure the prevention of emergency situations.

In the event of failure, he or she must effectively and timely respond to emergencies. The NL program thus prepares the lifeguard to assume the role of a professional activity leader, ensuring safe and enjoyable activities. The NL course cannot, in theory and practice, prepare candidates for all possible emergency situations. However, the NL training aims to develop fundamental surveillance techniques and promote the decision-making process.

These skills will enable lifeguards to assess and adapt to various aquatic facilities and emergency situations.

Instructor Training Courses

At least once a year and/or upon request, we offer the the Lifesaving Society Program.
