Staffing and Retention: Closing the Loop

Staffing and Retention: Closing the Loop

Given the demographic changes in Canada, particularly in New Brunswick and its municipalities, staffing and retention represent a significant challenge. We have gone from a labour market in which employees could count themselves lucky to have a job to one where employers can count themselves lucky to have employees at all, and be able to keep them.

In light of this new reality in the labour market, it is important to develop appropriate and efficient staffing practices. It is also important to enhance human capital management in order to grow employee retention within your municipality as well as provide a workplace that corresponds to your vision. After all, an organizational culture and management practices which effectively grow employee retention will result in a decrease in your recruitment efforts while allowing your organization to become more attractive to future applicants.

Goals:

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • develop a plan allowing you to identify your short, medium, and long term recruitment needs;
  • properly define roles and adapt your selection process in order to increase your chances of hiring the applicants possessing the right skills for the position;
  • implement active and reactive staffing strategies to get applicants who possess the right profile;
  • understand the dominant factors that motivate people to remain at their job;
  • define the organizational culture you wish to promote as well as the management practices that will allow you to shape it within your work place; and
  • make management principles operational.
