Université de Moncton faculty and staff members continue
to distinguish themselves through their publications,
organizational skills and participation in various forums
and activities. Listed below are some of their achievements
between July 2012 and the end of June 2013.
The Shippagan campus was the site of a visit by both
Canadian (University of Manitoba, University of Ontario
Institute of Technology) and European partners (University of
Pécs, Hungry, Université de Bretagne-Sud, France and Turku
University, Finland) involved in an international information
management mobility project (Cross Atlantic Partnership in
Network Systems and Information Management).
Monique Richard
, a music
professor since 2004, was the
recipient of the Moncton YWCA
Arts, Culture and Design Women
of Distinction Award.
Martin Filion
, a biology professor, has edited a book entitled
Quantitative Real-time PCR in Applied Microbiology with
Caister Academic Press of Great Britain.
Sandra Turcotte
, a chemistry and biochemistry department
professor, Canadian Cancer Research Institute chair and
researcher in residence at the Atlantic Cancer Research
Institute, received a Krescent New Investigator Award valued
at $180,000 over a three-year period. Professor Turcotte will
also benefit from infrastructure support in the amount of
$25,000. The Krescent New Investigator Award is granted to
individuals who have demonstrated excellence during their
doctoral and post-doctoral training in kidney disease.

, is the first
book of the Acadian Studies Institute collection

, a series dedicated to recording the voice of
Acadians who have contributed to the development of their
society. Launched in the fall of 2012, this book profiles the
life of
Corinne Gallant
, an influential feminist whose career
is marked by many commitments to the evolution of the
women’s movement. Simone LeBlanc-Rainville is a Université
de Moncton professor emeritus in education. She also was
secretary general of the university from 1995 à 1997.
An article by Edmundston campus professor
Amel Kaouche
will be published in the highly-regarded
Pure Mathematics
and Applications
publication. Written in cooperation with
Gilbert Labelle, Université du Québec à Montréal professor
emeritus, the article is entitled “Mayer and Ree-Hoover
weights, graph invariants and bipartite complete graphs”.
In 2013, the mathematics and statistics department joined
805 universities, institutes and organizations in 95 countries
to partake in activities to mark the officially-proclaimed
International Year of Statistics. This was an opportunity
to educate the public on the close relationship between
statistics, the science of numbers and other related fields of
study. Nine Université de Moncton professors are members of
scientific committees led by 25 experts. They are: professors
Fahim Ashkar, Jimmy Bourque, Éric Hervet, Gaetan
Moreau, Viktor Freiman, Salah El Adlouni, Jules
de Tibeiro, Ginette Bégin
and
Thu Pham-Gia

Alain Patoine
, a bachelor
in coastal zone management
program professor, presented part
of his research on the quality
of Northeastern New Brunswick
coastal waters during the Canadian
Conference for Fisheries Research
held in Windsor, Ontario.
Ruben Sandapen
, a physics and astronomy department
professor, has been selected as one of the speakers for the
Canadian Association of Physicists 2013 Lecture Tour.
Professor Sandapen’s lecture is entitled “Could the hadron
be the hologram of a vibrating string in a fifth dimension?”
It is based on a research published by him in 2012 in the
prestigious
Physical Review Letters
.
A new mathematics in motion project (
Mathématiques
en movement
) has been introduced at the Université
de Moncton under the initiative of mathematician and
professor
Donald Violette
. The project consists in offering
evening information sessions on mathematics intended
for the general public and all those who share a love
for mathematics.
