During the June 19, 2012 event commemorating the
49
th
anniversary of the foundation of the Université de
Moncton, Linda Schofield, 50
th
anniversary organizing
committee chair and executive director, university relations,
unveiled the 50
th
anniversary logo with president Raymond
Théberge and student recruitment service graphic artist
André Goguen who designed the logo.
Then, through a videoconference, on October 5, 2012,
President Raymond Théberge simultaneously launched
the 50
th
anniversary celebration on the three campuses
during a colourful ceremony held at the Moncton campus.
On this occasion, president Théberge announced that
two graduates would preside over the 50
th
anniversary
celebration: lawyer and entrepreneur Monique Imbeault
and renowned artist Herménégilde Chiasson.
The variety of activities held throughout the year highlighted
both past achievements and challenges for the year ahead.
In fact, the 35 activities held during the anniversary year
brought together 8,000 people and generated considerable
media interest.
On June 19, to bring this special year to an end, there were
many activities held at the Université de Moncton’s campuses.
On this bright sunny day, faculty and staff, provincial and
municipal elected officials, students as well as members of
the francophone and Acadian community came together at
the three campuses. In the morning, faculty and staff listened
intently to various presentations through videoconferencing
from the Moncton campus. After a superb rendering of
the Acadian national anthem
Ave Maris Stella
, there were
a number of guest speakers: Minister of Post-Secondary
Education, Training and Labour Danny Soucy; Premier
David Alward; co-chairs of the 50
th
anniversary celebration,
Monique Imbeault and Herménégilde Chiasson; Moncton
mayor George LeBlanc; chairman of the board of governors
André Richard and university president and vice-chancellor
Raymond Théberge.
Historians Maurice Basque and Marc Robichaud delivered a
presentation on the history of the Université de Moncton.
A meal was served to those gathered all three campuses
during which awards were presented to faculty and staff
members having completed 10 and 25 years of service,
and best wishes offered to those who were leaving for
a well-deserved retirement. At the Moncton campus, a
commemorative event was held with humorist Luc LeBlanc
and the band La Virée, while in Shippagan, participants
enjoyed local artist Tommy Bulger. Spirits were also high
on the Edmundston campus.
