MACAS Symposium 2025 Theme:
Circles of Resonance in Mathematics, Sciences, and Arts

The concept of the circle has many applications in STEM fields; it allows us to see how all things are connected. In Native spirituality, the circle reflects the interdependence of all forms of life and is evident in Healing, Talking and Sharing Circles (Stevenson, 1999).

In chemistry and physics, the circle illustrates the concept of resonance in molecules, where electrons are visualized as standing waves within a circular orbit. This depiction not only aids in understanding molecular structure but also metaphorically connects to broader ideas of interconnectedness and resonance.

Figuratively speaking, circles of resonance allow us to see the growth in learning as a spiral. The spiral, often seen as a three-dimensional extension of the circle, represents progression and development over time. Learning and growth are conceptualized as spirals, where each cycle or revolution builds upon the previous one, creating a sense of continuous advancement and expansion.

The circle and its three-dimensional counterpart, the spiral, serve as powerful symbols of connection, continuity, and progression across different dimensions of human understanding and experience.

For MACAS 2025, we are inviting researchers and educators from different fields to explore the tensions and resonances that surround mathematics applications in Arts and Sciences, as well as contributions of these fields to the development of mathematical thought.

Previous MACAS meetings have shown that there is more than one way of approaching these connections in research and practice. According to its tradition spanning over two decades, MACAS 2025 is open to a wide range of contributions. Topics of submission can include but are not limited to:

  • Theoretical investigations of the relations between mathematics, arts, and sciences.
  • Curricular approaches integrating mathematics and sciences.
  • Mathematical modelling and interdisciplinarity for studying and learning mathematics.
  • The role of arts, sciences and humanities in understanding mathematics in everyday situations.
  • Historical and intercultural dimensions of studying mathematics.
  • Critical issues in STEM and STEAM education.
  • Mathematical creativity from interdisciplinary perspective.
  • The role of technology in connecting mathematics, arts, and sciences.
