What is continuing education?

What does “continuing education” mean?

Continuing education in Canada and around the world

“Formation continue” (continuing education) is commonly used in French-speaking universities. It's an essential educational process designed to meet the evolving needs of individuals and companies in a constantly changing world. In Canada, and particularly at institutions such as the Université de Moncton, continuing education plays a key role in developing the skills of professionals at all stages of their careers. Combining flexibility, innovation and variable formats, continuing education enables people to acquire new qualifications, deepen their knowledge or adapt to the changing demands of the job market.

From an international perspective, continuing education is a strategic tool for fostering employability, stimulating economic competitiveness and enhancing personal fulfillment. It takes a variety of forms: degree programs, practical workshops, specialized certifications or online training, as well as face-to-face courses that integrate seamlessly into people's working lives. In France, as in French-speaking Canada, it reflects an inclusive and proactive vision of education, being accessible to both traditional students and professionals in the process of career transition. The average age of people involved in this activity is between 30 and 55.

By combining individuals' specific needs with modern societies' global objectives, continuing education has become an indispensable response to the challenges of our digital age. At the Université de Moncton, this mission is carried out with commitment through tailored courses rooted in local and international economic realities.

The Continuing Education department at the Université de Moncton

Here at the Université de Moncton, the Continuing Education department offers a remarkably diverse range of courses. The Continuing Education Office is renowned for its ability to provide unique learning paths adapted to people on the job market or in retraining.

Credit programs

We offer nearly 50 part-time credit programs and welcome many students to these programs, including our prestigious online MBA program. You can take short programs, certificates, or microprograms in administration, health, and community services at both undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to these programs, our selection includes bachelor's and master's degrees. Each program awards a certain number of university credits, which vary according to the chosen course.

For those wishing to take specific courses without enrolling in a particular program, it is also possible to become an independant student. Independent student status is a unique opportunity to explore university courses. This flexible path allows you to satisfy your intellectual curiosity about a subject or to perfect your knowledge in a specific area. It's an excellent option for people who want to learn while benefiting from the academic excellence of the university environment.

Non-credit professional training and programs

Do you have ambitions for professional development training, or do you want to do some personal development? The Continuing Education service is an excellent opportunity to satisfy this need. The short courses and training programs can range from half a day to several days, making it easier to adapt to your schedule. Always looking for new trends, we assess needs and develop new themes each year with our training staff to meet market needs. Our professional development proposal aims to offer our learners value immediately applicable at the end of the training course.

Language programs and courses

Several times a year, the Université de Moncton's Continuing Education department offers online language courses in French, English and Spanish. You can also take part in discussion groups to perfect your oral expression. Accessible at all levels, these courses are taught by our training staff, who will guide you as you progress.

For more advanced levels, we offer private tutoring.

For over 20 years, we've welcomed hundreds of students from all over Canada yearly to develop their French language skills. Our immersion camps are an excellent way to discover Acadian culture, visit New Brunswick and create new friendships.

Continuing education online

To give more learners the opportunity to continue developing their skills, we have been offering online training for several years. This is a real advantage, not only to facilitate delivery, but also to facilitate the transmission of specific knowledge, particularly in the field of new technologies, thanks to practical workshops.

Face-to-face training

We sometimes prefer a face-to-face format to improve educational deliverability and strengthen relationships with our learners, especially for our training programs.

Continuing education with certification: an asset for your future

Continuing education with certification is a powerful way of validating your skills in a specific field while enriching your professional profile. A certification officially attests to your mastery of knowledge or expertise and is recognized by employers and academic institutions. At the Université de Moncton, Continuing Education offers a variety of certifications adapted to current job market needs. Among these, the Programme de soins infirmiers critiques du Nouveau-Brunswick (New Brunswick Critical Care Nursing Program) stands out by meeting the requirements of the healthcare sector. Whether you're looking to strengthen your qualifications, specialize or access new professional opportunities, these certifications are a gateway to new professional horizons.
