Expanded Université de Moncton nurse practitioner program to graduate more students
The provincial government announced funding today to support the expansion of the nurse practitioner program at the Université de Moncton from part-time to full-time and to increase the number of annual graduates from three to 12.
“This announcement is great news for our province as it will help to quickly increase the number of nurse practitioners entering our health-care system as soon as next year,” said Health Minister Bruce Fitch. “Nurse practitioners are an integral part of our health-care system, and this initiative will certainly help us build on our success by moving the needle further in the right direction to improve access to primary care.”
Fitch made the announcement on behalf of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Trevor Holder.
In total, $970,000 has been allocated to expand the program.
“This year marks the 20th anniversary of our nurse practitioner program. It is therefore a pleasure for us to mark this anniversary in addition to announcing the increase in our training capacity,” said Denis Prud'homme, President and Vice-Chancellor of the Université de Moncton. “The funding announced today supports the implementation of our strategy and the achievement of our mission to train creative and committed health-care professionals. I am convinced these professionals will contribute to the transformation of the health system to better meet the needs of the francophone population of New Brunswick.”
Fitch said the initiative supports access to primary health care, which is one of the five action areas outlines in the New Brunswick’s health plan. In addition, it will contribute to the government’s commitment to increase funding to recruit doctors, nurse practitioners and extra-mural liaison nurses.
“Vitalité Health Network welcomes the strengthening of the program,” said Dr. France Desrosiers, president and CEO of the network. “With their expanded scope of practice, nurse practitioners will have a key role to play in our transition to an integrated and collaborative primary health care model.”
