First Progressive Pedestrian Crossing Comes to Life: Université de Moncton Demonstrates Leadership

The Université de Moncton is demonstrating leadership in its role as an inclusive and progressive institution serving the LGBTQ2+ communities by installing a modern and updated pedestrian crossing between the Taillon Building and the Student Centre on the Moncton campus.

In addition to the six colors of the traditional Pride flag, the new banner was joined by a chevron of five additional colors representing racialized and trans people. The purple circle on a yellow background represents intersex people. The intersex community chose yellow and purple to combat the gendered and binary stereotypes of blue and pink. The circle represents the uninterrupted life of the LGBTQ2+ communities. Roger (Rodge) LeBlanc, co-director of UMoncton Pride with Annie Roy-Charland, says, “The circle and other inclusive colors symbolize that there is nothing to fix when nothing is broken. There is nothing wrong with these people who are often in the minority and too often marginalized by false stereotypes of what is perceived as ‘normal’ in society.”

In the above photo, several members of the Prisme, Kaléidoscope and Pride UMoncton joined their colleagues and allies in thanking the Maintenance and Repair Service team under the supervision of Denis Maillet for the excellent work accomplished. All agree that the Université de Moncton is doing an exemplary job in accomplishing this outstanding progressive pedestrian crossing.
