Soccer: Final Games of the Regular Season

The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues and Aigles Bleus teams play their last two regular-season games this weekend in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) soccer action.

The Aigles travel to Halifax Friday to meet the Saint Mary’s University Huskies at 5 p.m. (women) and 7:15 p.m. (men). Saturday, the Cape Breton University Capers will visit the Stade Croix Bleue Medavie Stadium at 3 p.m. (women) and 5:15 p.m. (men).

Women’s Soccer
The Aigles Bleues (2-6-2=8 points, 8th position) and the Huskies (1-10-0=3 points, 9th position) are both eliminated from the AUS women’s championship. Moncton is looking for a 7th place finish in front of the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (9 points). The six qualifying teams for the championship are already decided.

“We are playing our last games and we aim to keep our same attitude, combativeness and determination to win,” said coach Mehyar Zekaroui. “We want to respect our fans and get as many standings points as possible. We face two very good teams. We hope for a very good beginning in both games and play some rookies to offer them experience and our veterans to win games.”

The Capers (8-2-0=16 points, 3rd position) will play the Aigles Bleues on Saturday. The team is already qualified and will host the AUS championship. Aigles Bleues 4th and 5th year players will be honoured in a ceremony preceding the Saturday game.

Men’s Soccer
The Aigles Bleus (3-6-1=10 points, 8th position) have a slim chance of qualifying for the AUS championship with four points behind the sixth place, the last qualifying position, currently held by the University of Prince Edward Island (14 points). The Huskies (5-5-1=16 points, 5th position) are also battling for the one of the last two qualifying positions with a very good chance of getting one.

“We have our destiny in our own hands,” Moncton coach Younes Bouida indicated. “We are in playoff mode, and I expect a very intensive game on Friday as both teams are battling for a playoffs spot. I hope my players have the will to keep on playing. They know this is a decisive game with no tomorrow in hand with a loss. We play two respectable teams.”

The Capers (9-0-1=28 points, 1st position) are assured to play in the AUS tournament they are hosting.

There will be a ceremony honouring 4th and 5th year Aigles players before the Saturday game.

The games can see watched on AUStv.ca.
