Étienne Hébert Chatelain has received a grant in the amount of $225,000. It was awarded jointly by the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Brain Canada Foundation (with funding from Health Canada) and the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation. The grant is awarded to young investigators who are launching a career in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Dr. Chatelain is a department of biology professor at the Université de Moncton.

His project is entitled Role of mitochondrial c-Src kinase in Alzheimer’s disease. It focuses on understanding the role of mitochondria in the onset and development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Since the beginning of his graduate studies, he has been interested in deciphering the role of mitochondria in human physiology. “Often referred to as the powerhouses of the cells, mitochondria convert the energy contained in nutrients into a form of energy that can be used by the cells,” said the young investigator. Considering that the brain has important energy needs, the mitochondrial functions in the brain are particularly important. Many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, are associated with defects in mitochondrial functions. A better understanding of these functions is central to the development of effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
