Medal hope for the Université de Moncton in cross country

The Université de Moncton women and men’s teams will travel to Antigonish on Saturday for the Atlantic University Sport cross country championships.

Coach Jean-Marc Doiron is confident his female team will be able to again step on the podium for a bronze medal as they did last year. He is looking for special performances from Kamylle Frenette and Carol-Ann MacDonald, his two top runners. The others are Magalie Babineau, Caroline Bujold, Sylvie Cormier, Sandra Durand, Lindsay Gauvin and Émilie Guthrie.

In the men’s category, he can count on Jérémie Pellerin and Rémi Poitras to lead the charge. Rookie Nassim Boushama, Raphaël Choquette, Vincent Leclair, François Pelletier, Daniel Saucier, Ryan Smallwood and Bryan Thomas are the other contenders.

''The training went really well this week,'' said third year runner, Kamylle Frenette. ''All team members are doing well and we should have a great race day. Our objective is the bronze medal for both teams.''

''The moment we have been training for is here,'' stated Moncton coach Jean-Marc Doiron. ''All team members are ready, excited and motivated. Both teams could finish in the top 3, but the task will not be easy. The Acadia (women) and Memorial (men and women) teams are strong. In order to win a bronze medal, I will need a strong performance by all runners. This is the first time in many years that the two Aigles teams are contenders in the same year.''

Cocagne runner Jérémie Pellerin is running in his fifth and last AUS championship. ''I will not hold back,'' Pellerin said. ''I believe I have a good chance at a medal. I prefer tactical races and according to the weather forecast, it should be windy. I believe that will help me and that I will run well.''
