Winnie Gangoua Babou is one of those students
who quite successfully balance studies and campus life.
She gets excellent grades and is full of energy. In April
2012, she completed the second year of the bachelor
of business administration program (international
management, CO-OP) at the Edmundston Campus.
She will continue her studies at the Moncton campus.
When Winnie left Douala, the metropolis of Cameroun,
in September 2010, it was with the intention of taking
up permanent residence in North America.
She adjusted well to her new chosen land. “I love
the snow and the cold weather,” she said outright.
“Canada is even more beautiful than I had imagined.
I had heard about your country for a long time and
I wanted to explore it.”
On campus, she was involved in a number of activities:
for example, she was the student representative with
the New Brunswick Human Resources Association, the
international students’ representative, and member of
the UMCE-CCNB peer support committee and of the
Vivre en harmonie group. She also participated in the
improvisation league and sang in the campus choir. Her
favorite sport is taekwondo, and she believes it taught
her respect for others and self control. “I am doing well
just like in karate,” she made a point of saying.
Even if she has been volunteering non-stop since she
arrived on the campus, Winnie’s academic performance
remains outstanding. She was on the most recent
dean’s list with the names of the students who have
an aggregate average for the semester of 3.7 or more.
She has been awarded several scholarships based
on her academic record. In two years, she obtained
82 credits compared to the average 60.
She also worked on campus with the international
recruitment component of Students Services and
as a guide at the Madawaska Historical Museum.
“I dream of leading the United Nations one day,”
she said without faltering. “And I expect to be able
to achieve my dream with studies in international
management and finance. After obtaining my bachelor’s
degree, I plan to do a master’s in finance. I am looking
at going to the University of Washington which is highly
recommended in that field. For my doctoral studies,
I am leaning towards the University of Toronto.
In the longer term, she does not reject the possibility of
coming back to Edmundston to settle down and have
a family. “I really like Northwestern New Brunswick.”
And she added with a chuckle, “I already know half
the population of Edmundston”. She was part of the
new mayor’s electoral team.
