The Association des anciens, anciennes et amis de l’Université de Moncton (AAAUM), the university’s alumni and friends association for the Moncton Campus, will pay tribute to two of its graduates – Roméo Savoie and Patrick Albert – during its Ovation Gala taking place on October 10 at the Delta Beauséjour in Moncton.

Artist Roméo Savoie will receive the Order of Merit of Université de Moncton Alumni. This distinction recognizes the outstanding contribution of an alumnus which has brought honour to his or her university and profession, whether it be in the areas of religion, politics, socioeconomics or the arts.

“Mr. Savoie is an icon in New Brunswick’s cultural and artistic community,” said Stéphane Robichaud, president of the AAAUM. “He is a trailblazer in the region’s contemporary art field. He led the way for several generations of artists. His priceless contribution to arts and culture makes him an exceptional source of pride and inspiration.”

The AAAUM will present the Emergence Award to Patrick Albert, president and CEO of Acadia Group of Companies, whose head office is located in Dieppe.

Established in 2008, the Emergence Award is meant to recognize the new generation of alumni who have distinguished themselves in various areas of activity, whether it be through an exceptional career or community involvement.

“Despite his young age, Mr. Albert has an impressive professional track record,” Mr. Robichaud said. “In addition to his proven entrepreneurial skills, he is a true leader and understands the importance of being involved with community organizations such as the Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick and the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute.”

The AAAUM’s mission is to encourage the promotion, development and influence of the Université de Moncton through its alumni and friends.

Whether in architecture, painting, sculpture or literature, Roméo Savoie’s career is multifaceted. His work includes more than 4,000 paintings, 50 buildings, six poetry anthologies and one novel.
Mr. Savoie was born in Moncton in 1928. He holds a bachelor’s degree in arts from the Collège Saint-Joseph in Memramcook (1950), a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the École des beaux-arts in Montreal (1956) and a master’s degree in plastic arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (1988).

He began his career as an architect and became a full-time painter in the early 1970s. From 1973 to 1981, he was a part-time professor in the Université de Moncton’s visual arts department. He also taught classes to adults, as well as private classes and workshops for children. His participation in the development of architecture in Acadie is priceless. In fact, he took part in the creation of several art galleries, including Galerie Sans Nom and Galerie 12, both located in Moncton. He was curator of the retrospective exhibit Les arts visuels en Acadie held in Bouctouche during the 1994 World Acadian Congress. This was the largest visual arts exhibit ever held in Acadie featuring more than 230 Acadian works which included paintings, sculptures, engravings, photos and ceramics. He was also curator during the establishment of the Fédération des caisses populaires acadiennes’ collection, as well as director, creator and co-director along with Herménégilde Chiasson of Évangéline, mythe ou réalité at the Festival international des arts contemporains de La Rochelle.

Over four decades, he has participated in countless solo and group exhibits. His works are also part of major public and private collections in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and France.

A member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to painting, architecture and literature as well as for his support to New Brunswick’s visual artists, Mr. Savoie has received many awards and distinctions throughout his long career. These include the Miller Brittain Award from the New Brunswick Arts Board, the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Visual Arts, an honorary doctorate in visual arts from the Université de Moncton, and an Éloize for artist of the year in visual arts and a tribute award for the collection of his work from the Académie des arts et des lettres de l’Atlantique.
