The Université de Moncton is saddened by the passing of Roméo Savoie, an artist who was able to establish an artistic foundation in Acadie thanks to his vision of modern art.

In 1999, the Université de Moncton awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts in recognition of his successful career as a painter, and in 2013, he was awarded the Order of Merit.

In the summer of 1997, he created a mural in situ at the Galerie d'art de l'Université de Moncton on the theme of Évangéline to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem. Savoie's work can be found throughout the Université de Moncton and beyond. Since 1998, he has held a number of solo exhibitions, primarily in Moncton and the southeastern region; as part of a group, his work has been shown in New Brunswick and elsewhere in Canada, the West Indies, Brussels and Paris.

The Galerie d'art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen collaborated on an ambitious retrospective exhibition of Roméo Savoie's work, presented at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 2006, at the Historical Museum of Madawaska and at the Galerie d'art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen in 2007. The publication that emanates from the exhibition, Roméo Savoie, Peintures/Paintings 1964-2004, brings together texts and images that span the range of his artistic production. Copies of this publication will be available free of charge at the Galerie d'art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen until October 29, 2023.

Flags will be flown at half-mast on all three campuses of the Université de Moncton on Wednesday, October 18 as a sign of our collective mourning for this great pioneer of contemporary art in Acadie.
