Soccer: Opening games Sunday in Moncton and games in Charlottetown Friday

The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues and Aigles Bleus de will each play two games this weekend in Atlantic University Sport women’s and men’s soccer action, each team seeking a first victory of the 2023-2024 season.

The Aigles (0-2-0) will be in Charlottetown on Friday evening to face the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers at 5 p.m. (women - 1-1-0) and 7:15 p.m. (men - 1-0-1). Sunday marks the opening of the 2023 season at the Stade Croix Bleue Medavie Stadium on the Moncton campus with the visit of the Memorial University Sea Hawks at 12 p.m. (women 1-1-0) and 2:15 p.m. (men - 2-0-0).

For coach of the women's team, Mehyar Zekaroui; "These are two different games that await us. We will face a team we can compete with, the Panthers. Our team will be ready and will perform well on the pitch to get our first win of the season. Sunday against the Sea-Hawks, we will face on the field one of the best teams in the league. We hope to surprise, and it will be a very interesting match.”

Co-captain Alexane Dupuis is predicting another big weekend: “Our goal is to get points against the Panthers and a first win,” she said. “Sunday, we are super excited about our first home game. All the players and especially the rookies are looking forward to this home opener. We want to play for everyone.”

Aigles Bleus coach Younes Bouida doesn't want to see his team fall too far behind in the AUS men's soccer standings. “We're going to play two tough capable teams,” he said. “However, we need to refine our game and find a way to score. The team got off to a very good start against two national-calibre teams, last weekend. Nothing will be easy this weekend against two opponents that play a very high calibre game.”

“We will face teams at our level” said Aigles Bleus co-captain Dave Guichard. “On Friday, we hope to beat the Panthers. It will be more difficult Sunday against the Sea-Hawks. We're excited about this home game. Everyone wants to give everything, keep the focus, and do everything to win at home. We hope our fans will be numerous.”

There will be a short season kick-off ceremony at home on Sunday before each game at the Stade Croix Bleue Medavie Stadium. It is possible to buy tickets for the games at the stadium entrance.
