Éric Dow, a doctoral student in sociolinguistics at the Université de Moncton, is one of fourteen 2023 Fellows from Canada and abroad selected to participate in the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation's leadership program.

“It is with great humility and excitement that I head back to school to begin this new adventure as a Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellow! [...] I feel very fortunate to be able to represent Acadie and the Atlantic provinces as part of the 2023 cohort, made up of brilliant researchers from across the country. I hope to be able to use this 'springboard' to continue my work in the service of the Acadian community by advancing our collective thinking on language rights and policies in the Atlantic provinces.”

This three-year leadership program is designed to develop committed leaders by equipping outstanding doctoral candidates with the skills they need to translate their ideas into action, for the betterment of their communities in Canada and around the world.

In addition to their participation in the leadership program, the Foundation will provide its 2023 Fellows with generous financial support over the next three years, as well as academic resources, mentoring and the opportunity to develop proficiency in Canada's official languages (English and French) and Indigenous people's languages.

Éric's project proposal is entitled: Aménagement linguistique des provinces atlantiques : Vers une autochtonisation de la politique linguistique en terres Wabanaki.

This project proposes to approach language planning in the Atlantic provinces from a multidisciplinary and decolonial perspective, in particular to explore how the evolution of language policies in the region could contribute to the protection and revitalization of Wabanaki languages, including Mi'kmawi'simk and Wolastoqey-Peskotomuhkati. A passionate advocate of the preservation of minority languages and cultures, Éric strives for cultural and political rapprochement between the Wabanaki and Acadian nations of the Atlantic provinces in his artistic and academic pursuits.

About the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation is an independent and non-partisan charity established in 2001 as a living memorial to the former prime minister. In 2002, with the support of the House of Commons, the Government of Canada entrusted the Foundation with the management of the Social Sciences and Humanities Advancement Fund. Through its doctoral scholarships, fellowships, mentoring program and public events, the Foundation encourages reflection and engagement on four themes of vital importance to Canadians: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada and the world, and people and their natural environment.
