Stéphanie Chouinard and Maurice Basque to Review the Current Situation Regarding the Name of the Université de Moncton

The Université de Moncton has retained the services of Stéphanie Chouinard and Maurice Basque to assess the situation surrounding the university's name and to write an informative report to be submitted to the Board of Governors.

Stéphanie Chouinard is an associate professor of Political Studies at the Royal Military College of Canada and Queen's University. Her research focuses on language rights and the rights of Indigenous peoples, as well as on minorities' relationship to the law. She received her bachelor's degree in political science from the Université de Moncton in 2008.

Maurice Basque is scientific advisor to the Institut d'études acadiennes at the Université de Moncton, where he was director from 2007 to 2010. A recognized historian, he specializes in colonial Acadie and the history of the Acadian political culture. He is also co-author of l'Histoire de l'Université de Moncton, published in 2013 with Marc Robichaud.

“We are confident that we have two people with complementary backgrounds and expertise who will carry out this work with all the necessary rigour,” said Denis Mallet, Chair of the Board of Governors.

Those in charge may call on the services of consultants as needed.

Chouinard’s and Basque's mandate is to produce an informative and technical report highlighting the sociohistorical, political, social, reputational, legal and economic aspects of the name of the university. The report, which will not contain any recommendations, will be submitted to the board of governors next fall.

The board will then decide whether to pursue the matter.
