Étienne Hébert Chatelain, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the Université de Moncton, has been awarded $75,000 in funding as part of Parkinson Canada's 2023 research competition. He is the only researcher from Atlantic Canada and a non-U15 university to be selected in this round of funding.

This one-year funding from Parkinson Canada is part of the pilot project grants program. Pilot project grants are designed to stimulate innovative ideas and projects that could lead to major grants from leading funding institutions.

This grant will enable Dr. Hébert Chatelain's team to study the cellular and molecular processes involved in the development of Parkinson's disease in human dopaminergic neurons, the cell type that degenerates and causes the disease.

Holder of the Canada Research Chair in Mitochondrial Signalling and Pathophysiology, Dr. Hébert Chatelain's team seeks to understand the role of the cell's energy powerhouses, called mitochondria, in cellular function and disease development. In this project, the team will examine the precise role of mitochondria in the death of dopaminergic neurons and the onset of Parkinson's disease symptoms.

Parkinson Canada is a founding partner that invests and collaborates with leading researchers across Canada. The goal is to pool data sets to better understand pathophysiology, improve prevention and treatment strategies, and accelerate the discovery of a cure. The organization has also been accredited by Imagine Canada's Standards Program, demonstrating excellence in five core areas: Board Governance, Financial Accountability and Transparency, Fundraising, Personnel Management and Volunteer Involvement.
