Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues coach Marc-André Côté is pleased that two players, Monica Richard of Sainte-Marie-de-Kent and Amélie Vachon of Mascouche, Quebec, have signed their U SPORTS letter of intent to join his women’s hockey team for the upcoming Atlantic University Sport season.

Monica Richard, 18, is a 5-foot-6-inch defensive player. She played for the Moncton U18 AAA Rockets of the Maritime League. “I'm joining the Aigles Bleues because I've always wanted to play university hockey,” she said. “It is a good organization, and I will have the chance to represent my area and my Acadian culture. I hope we can win a national championship.”

Richard has been playing hockey for 13 years. She also contributes to the offensive game. “I'm patient with the puck. I have a good sense of the game and have a good skating stroke. I want to adapt to the game of a higher caliber.”  She will pursue studies in kinesiology.

“I'm thrilled to join the Aigles Bleues family,” said Amélie Vachon, 20, who is 5 feet 4 inches tall. “I am joining the Aigles Bleues because it offers the opportunity I have wanted since I was young to continue my university studies while playing competitive hockey. It is also a small French-speaking university with few students creating an intimate and warm atmosphere.”

She played with the Patriotes du Cégep Saint-Laurent of the Réseau des sports étudiants du Québec, division 1. “My main ambition is to help the team earn a place in the U SPORT National Championship within the next 5 years. I aspire to graduate with a bachelor's degree in physical education and then evolve in my future work.”

She has been playing in the sport for 15 years.  She considers herself a versatile player with good game vision, a good wrist shot and a solid skater. She wants to improve her speed of execution, her handling of the puck and her strength in puck control battles. She also enjoys downhill skiing and fishing.
