Track and field: Aigles in Saint John Saturday

Several Université de Moncton athletes will be in Saint John on Saturday to participate in a final track and field meet before the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) championships the following week.

The Atlantic Indoor championships will be held at the Irving Oil Field House.

“This competition is an opportunity to gain essential experience for our athletes,” said coach Steve LeBlanc. “Rookies have had very little chance of gaining this experience, and it has been two years since veterans have had a competition. We will use the events to undertake final preparations to maximize our performances for the national ranking before the AUS Championships.”

Two athletes who will run and jump as rookies in their second university level competition are Valérie Déry of Bouctouche and Max Mazerolle of Cocagne.

“I'm going to participate in the high jump, it's the event I like the most,” said Valérie Déry. “I enjoy jumping and keep improving. We haven't had a competition for two years. It's my first year of university and it's exciting to play a sport. You have the chance to improve at every competition and that adds to the fun on campus. I jumped 1.50m the last time and I want to improve this mark if possible. I can't wait to participate in AUS competitions.”

Max Mazerolle will be at the start of two events, the 60m hurdles and the pole vault. “The hurdles race is my priority on Saturday,” he said. “I had a reasonable time in the last competition, and I aim to break the Université de Moncton record of 8.75 seconds. In the pole vault, I'm looking for more experience with only one competition so far. I want to improve before the AUS. These are two events that require more technique and it's better for me as I get ready for the AUS heptathlon.”

The athletes who will be present are: Gabriel Gagné, Noah Langille, Lucas Poirier, Samuel Robichaud, Jasmin Tardif, Alain Lavoie, Jonathan Roy, Maxime Savoie, Christian Monty Kpan, Max Mazerolle, Jérémie Thériault, Yannick Boudreau and Samuel Bourque on the men's side. Kyla Hughes, Rachelle Haché, Martine Haché, Natalie Fleming, Valérie Déry, Joëlle Léger, Caroline Gagnon, Roxanne Albert, Amélie Cormier, Hannah Levyssohn, Destiny Crabbe, Véronique Omalosanga, Charlotte Neander and Hillary MacLean are registered for women.
