The Université de Moncton Accepts AUS Decision to Suspend Sports Season until January 2021
The Université’s administration accepts Atlantic University Sport’s decision to suspend the regular season until January 2021.
“This agonizing decision was made first and foremost to protect the members of the university community, specifically our student athletes,” said interim President and Vice-Chancellor Jacques Paul Couturier, who also sits on the Board of Directors of the AUS, the body which made this major decision. “We are still committed to carrying out our strategic plan for sports and we reiterate our ongoing support for our student athletes and our stakeholders.”
The decision became inevitable as a number of universities, like the Université de Moncton, had recently announced that the majority of their courses would be offered through distance education. “In the coming weeks, we’re going to examine different options to continue to work with student athletes so that they can continue training until sports activities resume. We will also assess various ways in which our staff can coach them until the sports season starts up again,” Mr. Couturier continued.
The AUS won’t be making any decisions about the resumption of competitive sports during the winter session (starting in January 2021) until the fall, and it will follow Public Health directives.
The sports program at the Université de Moncton involves about 160 student athletes playing five sports on nine competitive teams: women’s track and field, men’s track and field, women’s cross-country, men’s cross-country, men’s hockey, women’s hockey, women’s soccer, men’s soccer and women’s volleyball. The Université de Moncton’s sports teams belong to the AUS regionally and U SPORTS nationally.
