Lise Frigault Appointed Ombud
Lise Frigault has been appointed Ombud of the Université de Moncton by the Board
of Governors. Ms. Frigault will report directly to the Board of Governors and her
main function will be to receive complaints from members of the university community who
have exhausted all internal recourse available to them and who believe that their rights
have been violated. She takes office today, January 11, 2021.
“We’re delighted to appoint Ms. Frigault to the position of
Ombud,” said Edith Doucet, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Université
de Moncton. “Her vast professional experience in conflict resolution, mediation and
managing complex questions will be of great benefit to our university community.”
Ms. Frigault’s mandate will be to advise members of the university
community on questions under her jurisdiction, to increase their awareness and to inform
them of the recourse and options available to them. She will also seek to improve
university practices. The Ombud is also responsible for making recommendations, carrying
out investigations and managing complaints and conflicts in the university
community.
For the last decade, Ms. Frigault has been a lawyer and mediator,
first with Field LL.P. in Edmonton and then with Frigault Law in Edmonton and Moncton. Her
practice involved multiple areas including Aboriginal matters, residential schools, human
rights, commercial and corporate law, international law, wills and estates, employment law
and workplace harassment.
During her work, she has interviewed over 2000
survivors of sexual and physical abuse in Indian residential schools. She has also
prepared legal files and participated in the conflict resolution process for over 500
cases. Ms. Frigault has also taught and given training throughout her whole
career.
She holds a specialized bachelor’s degree in Translation and a
Bachelor of Law degree from the Université de Moncton, as well as a Master’s
in Education (educational administration) from the University of Ottawa. She also holds a
certificate in Alternative Conflict Resolution Methods from the University of Windsor and
a certificate in Workplace Equity Analysis from Workpace Fairness
Alberta.
Ms. Frigault has completed many other certificates during her career, in particular in negotiation and mediation, restorative justice, family mediation, community mediation and restorative justice for elder abuse. She also has training in mediation for restorative justice.
The Office of the Ombud reports directly to the Board of Governors and is independent of all other administrative structures at the Université in order to maintain its impartiality.
