UdeM Professor Étienne Hébert Chatelain Receives $225,000 Grant
His project is entitled Role of mitochondrial c-Src kinase in Alzheimer’s disease. It focuses on understanding the role of mitochondria in the onset and development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Since the beginning of his graduate studies, he has been interested in deciphering the role of mitochondria in human physiology. “Often referred to as the powerhouses of the cells, mitochondria convert the energy contained in nutrients into a form of energy that can be used by the cells,” said the young investigator. Considering that the brain has important energy needs, the mitochondrial functions in the brain are particularly important. Many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, are associated with defects in mitochondrial functions. A better understanding of these functions is central to the development of effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
