The Edmundston Campus nursing
program enjoys quite an enviable
reputation. France L. Marquis’
contribution to the building of
that program is huge.
Currently dean of the nursing faculty,
she started teaching there in 1974
and has participated in the training
of hundreds of nurses.
A tenure professor, Ms. Marquis has been
an active participant in the evolution
of nursing not only at the Edmundston
campus, but throughout the Université
de Moncton network. She started as
a nursing care teacher at the École de
formation infirmière d’Edmundston and
became responsible for the four-year
bachelor program introduced in 1995.
She headed the program until 1999 and
resumed that role in 2003.
France L. Marquis believes that, over
the years, the École réseau de science
infirmière has become somewhat of
a model of excellence for a network
operation. “Obviously, as with any
change, we have had to adjust. I would
say that we have reached full cruising
speed with the implementation of the
bachelor of nursing’s competency-based
program in September 2010. Nursing is
being taught in a very standard fashion
at the three campuses, and this is
very positive both for the profession
and the university”
The new program was anchored in a
modern setting. The restructuring was
very timely in Edmundston in the midst
of the Simon-Larouche pavilion retrofit.
“Many hours were spent rethinking the
department during the major retrofit
of the campus’ infrastructure. The
facilities have been completely renovated
and equipped with state-of-the-art
technology. There is one sure thing–
our students are very lucky to have
such high quality facilities,” added
Ms. Marquis, who has also been the
clinical coordinator since the first offering
of the bachelor program in 1995.
Ms. Marquis has been involved in
research projects related to health
promotion and prevention and has
published professional articles. She
has also helped establish international
partnerships for student and teacher
exchange projects. She is active on
the provincial and national scenes
and contributes in many committees,
both government and community.
France L. Marquis is also well-known for
her dedication to nursing associations.
In the spring of 2009, she was
designated President elect of the Nurses
Association of New Brunswick (NANB).
Since September 2011, she has assumed
the role of NANB President for a
two-year mandate, the first U de M
professor to occupy such a position.
