Publications
Astronomy book experiences
phenomenal success
The official launch of Professor
Francis LeBlanc’s book on
astrophysics –
An Introduction to
Stellar Astrophysics
– was held on
May 19, 2011 on the Moncton
Campus.The event was an
opportunity to celebrate the
phenomenal success of the book
which is used as a course manual
in several large universities around
the world, including Harvard,
Stanford and Pennsylvania, rated
as among the five best universities
in the United States.
The book was published in Great
Britain by renowned publishing
house JohnWiley & Sons and
is considered one of the best
academic publications of 2010.
Sales have greatly surpassed the
publisher’s expectations. In fact,
a second printing was necessary
just a few months after it first
appeared. A third printing is
planned soon. It should also be
noted that the book was ranked
first on the list of Top 10 Best
“Astrophysics Textbooks” Books
and was ranked among the
Best of 2010 by publisher
JohnWiley & Sons.
The book is aimed at students
taking their first stellar
astrophysics course during
the final years of a bachelor’s
degree or the first year of a
master’s degree.The study of the
structure and evolution of stars
is fundamental to understanding
the functioning of the universe.
For example, it is within stars that
heavy elements were created, such
as carbon, oxygen, aluminum and
iron – the same elements found
on Earth and in the universe.
A former director of the physics
and astronomy department,
Mr. LeBlanc is currently dean of
the science faculty. He has been
an active researcher in the area
of stellar astrophysics since the
beginning of his career at the
Université de Moncton.
A native of Grande-Digue, he
received his bachelor’s degree
in physics from the Université
de Moncton, followed by a
master’s degree and Ph.D. from
the Université de Montréal. He
has been invited to present his
research findings at various major
international conferences around
the world, including France, South
Africa and Slovakia.
