Annual Report 2015-2016 - page 12-13

The Interdisciplinary Research Chair in Child and Youth Mental Health was
launched in the spring of 2016. The holder of the Chair is associate professor
Jimmy Bourque. He teaches in the secondary education and human resources
department, a component of the Faculty of education.
Funding is provided by a private donor and three partners: the Université de
Moncton, the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick and the
New Brunswick Health Research Foundation.
The Research Chair will be used as leverage to conduct productive research
on ways to strengthen youth resilience in New Brunswick’s Francophone,
Anglophone and First Nations communities. This will be done in partnership
with other researchers, from here and elsewhere. For the most part, young
people, their families, community groups and government organizations that
are concerned with child and youth mental health issues will be involved in
the process.

Excellence in governance and
organizational management
Excellence in governance and organizational
management are pillars of the Université de
Moncton’s mission. To ensure continuous
improvement, its managers wish to introduce
processes for management and control that lead to
the best oversight possible. In the discharge of our
mission, we must be able to rely on financial and
administrative processes that support our goals.
At our three campuses, we must manage available
resources effectively and responsibly.
The quality and prestige of a university depends
mostly on the capacity of its human capital to
generate and transmit knowledge. To meet our
strategic planning objectives, we require strict,
accountable and transparent governance processes.
Successful initiative to promote
psychological well-being
One of the Université de Moncton’s objectives is to
create a work environment and atmosphere that
are conducive to the professional development
and well-being of all members of the university
community. The initiative to promote psychological
well-being sits remarkably well with this objective.
The first phase of its implementation focused on
awareness; it has already been completed. Working
groups were established at all three campuses and
mental health awareness activities were organized.
There were conferences with Canadian senator
Roméo Dallaire and Olympian and professional
hockey player Theoren Fleury.
Initial data on the initiative demonstrates a
willingness on the part of members of the university
community to engage in mobilization activities
aimed at making the university experience as
inclusive and as healthy as possible for both students
and staff members.
During the winter of 2016, about 300 staff and
faculty members attended workshops on well-being.
As a result of the strong demand, a second series of
workshops was presented.
The second phase of the initiative will be action-
focused. It will include setting up student well-being
committees and organizing activities related to the
objectives.
Strategic planning, institutional data and
action plan
The strategic plan entitled
A dream to call our own
was adopted in November 2013. Developing the
plan was a strategic thinking and re-orientation
exercise that enabled the university to adopt a
conceptual framework that focuses on issues within
well-defined parameters. The exercise was an
opportunity for the Université de Moncton to reflect
on, renew and, if need be, redeploy its fundamental
mission. The 2020 strategic plan led to a three-year
action plan – adopted in February 2015 – entitled
Actions to call our own. In 2015 and 2016, working
groups were busy developing projects in line with
the vision of the plan. Summaries of the results were
presented to the Board of Governors in February
2015 and in April 2016. The summary of results for
2016 is available on the university’s microsite
Vers
l’U de M 2020
.
In conjunction with these governance activities,
the research office publishes an annual summary
of organizational data. The summary gives an
overall picture with information on admissions,
enrolment, retention, degrees granted, student
placement, student satisfaction and the ranking of
the university.
Governance committee working at full tilt
In June 2014, the Board of Governor’s governance
committee launched its work plan. It provides for
18 projects grouped under ten themes, including
governance and transparency of the board of
governors, board appointments, performance
measurement and the transition to paperless
meetings. In 2016, the committee hopes to present
a governance framework and a training program
for members.
New section on access to information
In an attempt to increase transparency and enable
the university community and the public to better
understand various contexts, a new section has
been added to the
U de M en bref
website menu.
It includes requests under access to information
from both public and private media organizations,
tenders and contracts awarded by campus,
organizational data and financials.
Continuing Education develops a strategic
plan
Continuing Education adopted a strategic plan as
part of the Université de Moncton’s 2020 reflection
and re-orientation exercise. It embraces the five key
areas included in
A dream to call our own
.
The strategic planning exercise was an important
step to ensure the success of the service. It was
an opportunity to define its strategic orientations,
its objectives and its projects. It also enabled the
service to identify how to increase staff mobilization.
