A network of possibilities
I am pleased to present the Université de Moncton’s
2011-2012 Annual Report. This document highlights the
activities that impacted the institution during this period,
which extends until the end of May 2012.
It goes without saying that this is an important year for
me because it is during its April 14
th
, 2012 meeting that
the Board of Governors confirmed my appointment as
ninth President and Vice-Chancellor. I feel privileged to
have been chosen to lead the destiny of this wonderful
university over the next five years.
2011-2012 indeed marked the end of an era for
the Université de Moncton with the departure of
Yvon Fontaine, who was President and Vice-Chancellor
since 2001. I take this opportunity to congratulate
him and thank him on behalf of all those who have
this institution at heart.
Since taking office on June 1
st
, 2012, I have toured the
campuses and the region. I have had the distinct privilege
of meeting many people who work directly or indirectly
to ensure the success of our institution.
During my visits to faculties, laboratories and offices at
our three campuses, I have observed that both faculty
and staff are very proud to work for the university.
This institution is a great source of pride for many
people and already, I have a better grasp of the
strength of their attachment.
I will continue my visits during the new academic year
and I will avail myself of every opportunity to more
fully integrate the life of the Université de Moncton.
We are facing many issues. We must double down
and continue meeting with the province’s other
postsecondary institutions to ensure that the provincial
government takes into account the needs of the
universities in its budget forecasts.
Student recruitment is a significant challenge.
Nevertheless, on December 1
st
, 2011, there were
4,899 students registered at the university’s three
campuses. Of these, 600 were international students
who come from about forty countries and enrich the
composition of the student population. I believe that
these figures bode well for the future of our institution.
In 2012, the Université de Moncton will celebrate its
50
th
anniversary. This will bring a unique opportunity
to commemorate the highlights of its history and to
mark its successes both past and present.
The university’s various components are preparing
to celebrate this anniversary with a variety of activities
to be held throughout the 2012-2013 academic year.
We hope that the community as a whole will be part
of the celebration.
As I mentioned during the consultations which preceded
my appointment, the three-campus structure of this
institution is a great asset. With my management team,
I wish to continue developing this structure to ensure
that the three campuses can work together towards a
common objective: ensuring that the largest French-
language university outside Quebec continues to thrive
well into the future.
This year’s annual report includes the profile of three
faculty members who are well in tune with the
networking structure of the university. These professors
are part of the nursing program which is very successful
throughout the Université de Moncton network.
I invite you to read this report to become better
acquainted with the successes of the Université
de Moncton community during the last year.
