Flood Volume and Duration

GENERAL

Planning of control structures, improvement of forecasting techniques, rational reservoir operation, flood knowledge and forecasting require estimation of flood characteristics. This estimate should be as accurate as possible in order to avoid overestimation of floods (high costs) or underestimation of floods (high risks, loss of human life, etc.). In order to achieve this objective, the statistical approach, which includes the distribution functions and the partial-time series model or the exceedance model, are privileged instruments for the estimation of the characteristics of the floods, among others the peak discharges, volumes and durations of floods.
