17 Moncton campus athletes nominated for awards at Athletes Gala

The annual Athlete Recognition Gala of the Université de Moncton athletic department of the Moncton campus will take place on Thursday, April 6 and 17 athletes have been nominated for the awards, which will be presented during the evening at the Delta Beauséjour in downtown Moncton.

The athletes composing the 9 teams brought many emotions to the fans throughout the year. They demonstrated their skills on the field, the gym floor, the ice and on the track. The various awards of merit for the 2022-2023 season will be presented to student athletes in Atlantic University Sport and U SPORTS competitions.

The five nominees for Female Athlete of the Year are: Caroline Gagnon of Moncton in track and field; Emily Robichaud of Dieppe in volleyball; Sophie Black of Dieppe in cross-country; Erica Plourde of Pigeon Hill in hockey; and Chelsea Burnham of Saint John in soccer, all from New Brunswick.

The title of male athlete of the year will be awarded to one of three nominees: Nathaël Roy of Lévis Québec in hockey; Alain Lavoie of Grand Falls in cross-country and Samuel Bourque of Notre-Dame-de-Kent, New Brunswick in athletics.

A hockey player from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Jacob Dion; Carignan Quebec soccer forward Wylliam Sydavong Ok; Dieppe, New Brunswick track and field athlete Guillaume Basque and Clermont-Ferrand France cross-country runner Damien Canal are the four vying for the men's rookie title.

The choice for the women's rookie title will be made between five athletes: Élodie St-Jacques of Saint-Jérôme Quebec in hockey; Éloise Hachey of Petit-Rocher-Ouest in athletics; Gabrielle Leclair of Dieppe in volleyball; Annie Clarke of Miramichi in cross country and Aleksis Roy of Moncton in soccer, the last four from New Brunswick.

A new prize will be awarded this year, that of fair play. This team award will be presented annually to a sports team that demonstrates leadership through its various communities and academic engagements. Its goal is to support other sports teams during games and competitions at home and/or make a difference in their community. The nominated teams are the Aigles Bleus men's hockey and the Aigles Bleues in women's hockey and soccer.  

The Coach of the Year Award and the unveiling of each team's Most Outstanding Athletes will also be announced during the evening.
