At a special ceremony held Friday, the Université de Moncton Medal of Honour was awarded to artist Claude Roussel for his outstanding achievements.

“Thanks to Mr. Roussel's vision of contemporary art and because he chose to put his immense talent as a painter and sculptor at the service of the then very young Université de Moncton, its Faculty of Arts and in particular its Department of Visual Arts were able to enter resolutely into the modern world and give Acadie a much-needed energy and desire for renewal,” said Louise Imbeault, Chancellor of the Université de Moncton,

At the age of 92, Claude Roussel becomes the 32nd recipient of the Université de Moncton's Medal of Honour. In addition to being the founding director of the visual arts department, he was a professor in the department for nearly 30 years. Considered one of the pioneers of modern Acadian art through his avant-garde, prolific and versatile artistic productions in sculpture, relief and painting, Claude Roussel has to his credit more than 200 exhibitions, 60 monumental projects and numerous works of art in important public collections in Canada and abroad.

Among the many awards and honours he has received during his long career: Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medal, Member of the Order of Canada, Medal of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, Canadian Centennial Medal, Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, Member of the Order of New Brunswick, and the Lieutenant-Governor's Lifetime Achievement Award for New Brunswick, to name a few.

The Université de Moncton recognizes a select number of individuals by awarding them the Université de Moncton Medal of Honour. The recipients, through their outstanding activities, have advanced the cause, mission or work of the Université in a prominent or superior manner.
