Gérard J. Poitras Named New Dean of the Faculty of Engineering
The University Council announces the appointment of Gérard J. Poitras as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Université de Moncton, for a regular 5-year term beginning July 1, 2022.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Applied Science (Civil Engineering) in 1984, Gérard J. Poitras worked in consulting engineering before becoming a teacher at the Collège communautaire du N.-B. at the Edmundston Campus (1988-2002). During this time, he completed, on a part-time basis, a bachelor's degree in education (1991 - Université de Moncton), a master's degree in applied science (1998 - Université de Moncton) and a doctorate in engineering science (2002 - Université de Poitiers).
Dr. Poitras then joined the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering in 2002 as a professor specializing in structures. His primary research interests include structural dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, and numerical and experimental methods. He has served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering since 2019. He also served as the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering for several years. Dr. Poitras has been a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB) for over thirty years. He was named a Fellow of Engineers Canada in 2013 and a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering in 2014. He has also served on numerous faculty, academic and professional committees within and outside the university.
