The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, was at the Université de Moncton today to announce an investment of almost $2 million from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency for artificial intelligence.

The funding will allow the Université de Moncton to expand its training capabilities through the creation of a new professional master's program in artificial intelligence and data science, acquire computer equipment and tools, and create the Atlantic Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and Data Management (PLEIADE).

PLEIADE will focus on finding internships and research projects for students with the assistance of external partners.

“With this announcement, we expect to be able to attract talent to a variety of existing programs and meet society's needs in artificial intelligence, data science, and robotics by offering training entirely in French,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Denis Prud'homme.

This training will not be limited to traditional students as the institution also plans to create microprograms for people in the workforce.

“The investment announced today will be a game changer not only the university, but for our regions as well,” added Associate Vice President of Research and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Francis LeBlanc. “The creation of the Atlantic Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and Data Management will allow us to attract talent from around the world and contribute to the economic development of New Brunswick while meeting the needs of the community. It will build on our existing strengths, like our five centers and research groups, as well as several current programs, and will result in an overall investment of $8 million over the next five years.”

The Master of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science will be available beginning in the fall 2023 semester.
