It is with great sadness that the university community learned of the passing of Claudette Bradshaw.

On May 19, 2001, the Université de Moncton awarded Bradshaw an honorary doctorate in social work for her involvement in the Greater Moncton community and her social commitment.

Claudette Bradshaw is a native of Moncton, New Brunswick. She was elected Member of Parliament for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe in 1997 and re-elected in 2000. She was the first Acadian to be appointed as a minister in the federal government and was first appointed parliamentary secretary to the minister of international cooperation and minister responsible for the Francophonie. She was appointed to Cabinet as minister of labour in November 1998, and in March 1999 was given the additional responsibility of federal coordinator on homelessness.

Known for her humanity and her hugs, Bradshaw was active for many years in several community organizations before entering politics. In 1974, she founded Moncton Headstart Inc. as an early family intervention center and served as its executive director for over 20 years. Prior to that, she served as the director of the Girls' Program at the Boys and Girls Club of Moncton.

Over the years, she has been a spokesperson and advocate for families and children in need, whether it be with the New Brunswick Housing Task Force, the Moncton Housing Coalition, or the Provincial Early Childhood Education Task Force. In addition, she has represented New Brunswick on the National Crime Prevention Council and the Atlantic region on the Canadian Council on Social Development.

Flags on all three campuses will be flown at half-mast today, March 28, until 6 p.m. on the day of the funeral (April 1st).

Sincere condolences.
