With a record of 3-4-0-1 and 7 points following 8 games at the beginning of the season, the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues are preparing for two very different opponents this weekend in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey.

The Blue and Gold (6th position) will be in Fredericton on Friday to face first-place University of New Brunswick Reds (6-1-0-1=13pts) in a game that should produce exciting hockey. Saturday at home at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena at 7 p.m., the St. Thomas University Tommies (4-4-0-0=8pts, 5th position) will be the opponents of the local team in a positioning battle that is grooming between these two teams.

Moncton lost its first duels against these two teams at the beginning of the season, 3-1 and 1-0. These games are an opportunity to improve. “It's certain that we are no longer the same team as at the beginning of the season when we played them,” said coach Marc-André Côté. “The Reds are in the lead with a good goalkeeper and a good offense while the Tommies have one of the best defensive squads. These are two great challenges for us this weekend. We worked on our special units in progression this week. We lost games because we were not efficient. We also focused on our working habits during training and games.”

Rookie Erica Plourde enjoys playing with the Aigles Bleues and contributes to the offense. “My adaptation is going well, and I feel like I'm improving with each game and gaining confidence,” she said. “The game is much more physical, fast and the caliber much higher than the AAA midget. The rapidity of play and speed of execution need getting used to. I play better than in the first games. We are looking for the four big weekend points. We will play according to our game, regardless of the opponent. We will have to shoot at the goal and take the rebounds. Our offensive is unlocking.”  Plourde is happy to represent an Acadian university near her home.

In short: with 9 goals and 2 assists, Aigles team captain Janie Poitras is second in the AUS scoring, one point behind the leader. Catherine Longchamp will miss the weekend games due to an injury. Rookies Erica Plourde (2-3) and Shani Rossignol (0-5) each have 5 points, placing them in 23rd place. Cassandra Call (2-1), Catherine Longchamp (0-3) and Pascale Lebeau (0-3) are in 10th place in the scoring for defensemen.

Spectators are admitted for Saturday’s game. However, mask is mandatory throughout the arena. It will also be necessary to show proof of double vaccination and a government-issued ID card before entering the arena.
