Back to School in a Period of Transition at the Université de Moncton

Moncton, August 19, 2021 – Classes will resume on September 7th on the three campuses of the Université de Moncton. As announced earlier this spring, classes will be held in the classroom. However, the Université de Moncton is currently in a transition period of the green phase on the recommendation of the New Brunswick Public Health. This transition period will end on September 24, at least until further notice, for the Shippagan and Edmundston campuses. The Moncton campus will remain in transition until October 15, unless otherwise advised by Public Health.

Mandatory Masks and Other Measures

During the transition period, masks are still required in classrooms for academic courses and in common areas such as hallways and offices with multiple occupants. Practical courses have specific operational plans that detail the measures in place.

Once the transition period is over, certain measures will remain in place for the remainder of the semester, such as space use at only 50% capacity and a physical distance of one metre between individuals in the space. Students will select a seat in each of their courses and will be required to occupy that same seat for the duration of the fall semester.

Hand sanitization is also mandatory when entering all university buildings.

Alternate or additional measures could be announced at any time depending on the evolution of COVID-19 cases in a region or in the province as a whole.

Special Situation on the Moncton Campus

The transition period will remain in place until October 15 on the Moncton campus due to the reported cases in Zone 1. Depending on how the situation evolves, this date may be extended.

“We are following the pandemic situation closely and we always have a special committee of our institution's senior management in place to follow developments and recommendations from Public Health,” says Rector Dr. Denis Prud'homme. “I encourage all members of the university community to get both doses of the vaccine. The more people we get vaccinated, the more likely we will be able to return to a university life that allows for a togetherness that is greatly missed.”

Vaccination clinics will be held on or near campuses. The university reminds us that pharmacies in the province are important partners in the fight against COVID-19 and that many offer free vaccines to the public.

Mandatory Vaccination

The Université de Moncton is currently gathering information from provincial authorities. A decision will be made shortly and communicated quickly.
