Message on the Occasion of the Passing of Elder Gilbert Sewell

The Université de Moncton wishes to pay tribute to Mi’kmaq elder Gilbert Sewell, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 81.

A highly respected member of the Pabineau First Nation, Mr. Sewell dedicated much of his life to keeping the Mi’kmaq culture and language alive. He was a historian, musician, storyteller and artist. He taught crafts, plant-based medicine, science, music, art and the Mi’kmaq language.

He received many honours throughout his life, including the New Brunswick Human Rights Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He also served on the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.

Elder Sewell was close to the Acadian people and would refer to our long friendship and shared history. He wanted Acadians to learn more about their historical ties to the Mi’kmaq.

The members of the university community join together in offering their deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and Pabineau First Nation.

Flags will be flown at half-mast on all three Université de Moncton campuses for two days.
