Research on the Use of Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence in COVID-19 Screening Continuing at the Université de Moncton

Professor Moulay Akhloufi of the Computer Science Department at the Université de Moncton has received a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) grant to continue a research project into COVID-19 detection. This grant is in addition to other funding already received to provide him with the best possible environment in which to carry out this research with its huge community impact.

Since March 2020, the research project directed by Professor Akhloufi, Director of the Perception Robotics and Intelligent Machines Group (PRIME)at the Université de Moncton, has developed a first solution to detecting COVID-19 on lung X-rays. Now a collaboration with the Institut du Savoir Montfort (at the Hôpital Montfort) is providing an opportunity to test and improve this solution.

“With this grant we can continue to strengthen our AI tool to detect COVID-19 from lung X-rays,” Professor Akhloufi said. “This grant will also allow us to develop solutions for other types of medical imaging such as ultrasound and CT images. Our collaboration with the Institut du Savoir Montfort is an opportunity to test the effectiveness of our solutions in the field. Up to now, the results have been very positive.”

“This prestigious grant bears witness to the enormous potential of the tool developed by Professor Akhloufi to detect COVID-19,” stated Francis LeBlanc, Associate Vice-President, Research and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at the Université de Moncton.

The model for X-rays is available for free online. Models for ultrasound and CT images will be available soon on the same site.
