COVID-19 Emergency Fund Launched for Student Community

The Université de Moncton today launched the COVID-19 emergency fund for the student community with the goal of providing essential short-term support to students coping with pandemic-related financial problems in terms of food or housing.

“Numerous members of the student community on all three of our campuses are currently coping with the negative impact of this crisis and need our help,” stated Jacques Paul Couturier, interim president and vice-chancellor. “Some have lost jobs or had to abandon paid internships, while others have been unable to return home due to the closure of international borders. These individuals are in a precarious financial situation and having difficulty meeting their most basic needs.”

The details of the COVID-19 emergency fund for the student community, along with the financial aid application form, are now available on the Université de Moncton website.

During this time of great instability, the Université de Moncton appeals to the public to show its generosity and support for the community’s most vulnerable students by donating online at www.umoncton.ca/dons (link in French only at this time).

The Université de Moncton and the student associations on all three campuses have already committed to contributing to the new fund, including the Association générale des étudiantes et étudiants de l’Université de Moncton, campus d’Edmundston (AGÉÉUMCE); the Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants du Campus universitaire de Moncton (FÉÉCUM); the Association des étudiants et étudiantes internationaux du Centre universitaire de Moncton (AÉÉICUM); and the Association étudiante de l’Université de Moncton, campus de Shippagan (AÉUMCS); as well as the Conseil étudiant du secteur science infirmière in Bathurst.

Every effort is being made to promote students’ well-being and set them up for success after classes resumed remotely on March 30 following a two-week shutdown due to the current situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
