The Perception, Robotics and Intelligent Machines Research Group (PRIME) at the Université de Moncton is partnering with the firm Two Hat to develop artificial intelligence (AI)-based cybersecurity and chat-filtering software.

Two Hat, a British Columbia-based AI technology company, develops cutting-edge software and next-generation moderation tools for virtual worlds and social networking apps.

“We are fortunate to have this opportunity to collaborate with a company like Two Hat,” stated Moulay Akhloufi, professor with the Department of Computer Science at the Université de Moncton. “Artificial intelligence continues to evolve quickly and gain further importance in today’s society. Through this partnership, our computer science students will have the chance to put into practice the concepts they have learned as part of their university studies.”

Through the national non-profit research organization Mitacs, graduate students under Dr. Akhloufi’s supervision will work on developing new machine-learning, deep-learning and natural language-processing (NLP) algorithms to detect toxic messages and moderate visual content online. These tools will help in combating cyber-bullying, incitement to suicide and online sexual exploitation as well as identifying offensive or inappropriate images and videos containing references to violence, nudity, guns or other similar content.
