The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (1-0) and St. Francis Xavier University X-Men (0-1) will go all out on Friday for the second game of the Subway Atlantic University Sport best of 3 quarterfinal series in men’s hockey in Antigonish. Moncton won its first game in five years in the playoffs on Wednesday.

Moncton won its first game 3-2 with a hat trick from Vincent Deslauriers, stellar goaltending from Étienne Montpetit and all-round play from all players.

“We were very happy with the way we played on Wednesday,” stated defenceman Justin Guénette. “It was my first playoff win in four years. We played a tight defensive play with only five defencemen. Our forward really helped us. We sent the puck behind their defencemen and sent our forwards after it. We know our goaltender excels at his job. We need to keep the same high-level energy and build on our Wednesday play. The win has given us more confidence. We need more energy on Friday, and we will work on some shortcomings like limiting the number of rebounds, defensively. That is the key for the defencemen.”

Moncton coach, Judes Vallée, is confident his troops will come out and win on Friday. “The second game is often the hardest to win, and I can expect a strong opposition as they will fight for their life,” said Vallée. “They will be out for a win. We came out strong in the first period on Wednesday, and we need to do the same thing. All the players were dedicated to the cause. We created our chances on Wednesday and the players applied the things we had learned in practice. Individually, it was the first playoff career victory for Robbie Graham in five years. Maxime St-Cyr contributed three assists and Vincent Deslauriers three goals. We held a small practice on Thursday. Friday will be our most important game of the season.”

The Saint Mary’s Huskies have a 1-0 lead over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers in the other series. They play Friday in Charlottetown.
