In Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey action, the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus are beginning the second semester this weekend.

Moncton (8-6-4=20 points, 4th position) resumes its regular schedule on the road with games on Friday and Saturday in Nova Scotia where they will face the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men (7-9-2=20 points, 5th position) and the Dalhousie University Tigers (4-12-2=10 points, 7th position), respectively. Moncton has lost its last two games at the end of November. Moncton and St. Francis Xavier have the same number of points, and the games between the two teams are always very tight scoring. The Tigers have a deficit of five points for a playoff spot and they are always a very tough opposition to the Bleu et Or. Moncton has 12 games to play in the regular schedule play.

“This is a nice challenge for us with two road games,” stated Aigles Bleus coach, Judes Vallée. “We were not able to play our exhibition game, so I look forward to seeing how the players will react. We did work hard during the first semester to get where we are, and we cannot lose that. We held two practices on Thursday to refresh our systems of play. We have the opportunity to add four standings points.”

Team captain Vincent Deslauriers is confident the players are in shape for this weekend. “We did ask them to continue training individually,” Deslauriers said. “These are two important road games. We play against teams with a lot of energy and fast skating. It will be a nice battle on the ice, and we should not complicate our play. The addition of two players will create a nice internal rivalry for the forwards.”

Former Bleu et Or player, Alex Noël, and newcomer Samuel Guilbault will be in the line-up this weekend. Noël is attempting a return to action after three and a half years. He played with the Aigles Bleus from 2012 to 2016. Samuel Guilbault played three and a half seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, from 2014 to 2018, with the Charlottetown Islanders (one season) and the Shawinigan Cataractes (two and a half seasons).

In brief…

  • Goaltender Alexi Thibaudeau, who missed the first semester following an injury, will return to the line-up.
  • Moncton was supposed to play an exhibition game last Saturday, but it was cancelled when the University of Windsor Lancers were delayed by bad weather and could not make it in time for the game.
  • Maxime St-Cyr is the top Aigles Bleus scorer with 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in 18 games. He ranks fifth in AUS.
