Soccer Aigles Face Critical Weekend

With four games remaining in the regular season in Atlantic University Sport soccer action, the Université de Moncton teams will play twice this weekend and must obtain standings points to keep any hope of participating in the series. The first six teams in the final standings play in the playoffs.

The Acadia University Axewomen (7-0-2=23 points, 1st position) and Axemen (2-6-1=7 points, 9th position) will play at the Stade Croix Bleue Medavie Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., respectively, against the Aigles Bleues (2-4-2=8 points, 7th position) and Aigles Bleus (2-5-1=7 points, 8th position).

Moncton will travel to Fredericton on Sunday to meet the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds (4-4-1=13 points, 6th position-women; 5-2-2=17 points, 3rd position-men).

The Aigles Bleues, with eight points, are five points behind the Reds. “These are two important games against two very good teams, Acadia in first place aux UNB in sixth,” said coach Mehyar Zekaroui. “These will be two hard games for us. We are looking for a point against Acadia, and we have no choice but to win against UNB. They are our direct competitors for a playoff spot. All players are ready, motivated and concentrated on the task at hand to attain our full potential.”

The Aigles Bleus, with seven points, are also five points behind sixth spot Saint Mary’s University. “These are playoff games for us,” coach Younes Bouida said. “We need to work hard and be alert. We had a week of exams, and it was harder on the practices. The players are ready for the challenge. Acadia did win its last game, and we need to really play them for the win. The first goal of the game will be crucial for the rest of the game. Our concentration will be a necessity. Against UNB, we will be the underdogs. Team solidarity and a strong mental force will be needed.”

The games can be seen on AUStv.ca.
