Hockey Aigles Bleues host Tommies Friday

The 2019-2020 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s hockey season begins on Friday at 7 p.m. at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena. The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues will host last year’s champions, the St. Thomas University Tommies.

The Marc-André Côté coached team did play five exhibition games and won two. Last season, the team finished in sixth place in the final standings, with a 13-15-0 record, for a total of 26 points. The Saint Mary’s University Huskies then eliminated them in three games in the quarterfinal.

“We have a nice challenge from the beginning, playing last season’s champions, the Tommies,” coach Marc-André Côté said. “Our fans will see on the ice a fast-skating team that plays well in both directions, defensively and offensively. Our players will be determined.”

Team captain is Katherine Dubuc is entering her fifth and final season in university hockey. “At the end of the season, I don’t want to have any regrets,” said Dubuc. “We lost only a few players from last season and with the addition of the hard-working rookies, we will have a speedy and experienced team. As captain, I want to be a positive leader and give my 100 percent. Against the Tommies, we will have to play a full 60 minutes and apply our strengths and qualities. We will use our speed and passing skills. Our challenge is to put the puck in the net. We did practice that element a lot lately. We will overburden their defence and be creative to get the puck behind the goaltender.”

Moncton is playing its 12th season in AUS women’s hockey. The team has six rookies and 15 returning players. Second-year goaltender Audrey Berthiaume is back and will have Mélanie Arsenault as an assistant. Rookies include Pascale Lebeau, Catherine Longchamps, Rose-Aly Langlois, Alexia Desforges, Jessica Turbide and Mélodie Arsenault. Team captain is Katherine Dubuc with assistants Janie Poitras, Jennifer Arsenault and Sarah-Ève Mailhot. All members of this year’s squad will be introduced in a ceremony prior to the game.
