Acadian Timber Corp. has made a $500,000 major donation to the Evolution Fundraising Campaign of the Université de Moncton. The official announcement was made on June 21 in the presence of Frank McKenna, representatives from the Université de Moncton and guests from the community. In recognition of this donation, the common room at the School of Forestry will be named Agora Acadian Timber.

This generous donation serves to establish the Fonds de bourses Acadian Timberscholarship and bursary fund. Through this fund, scholarships and bursaries will be awarded to students enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at the School of Forestry of the Université de Moncton’s Edmundston campus.

In addition to assisting the School of Forestry in fostering partnerships with actors in the forestry sector, this major donation will enable the School to make upgrades to the common room as well as purchase advanced forestry technologies such as specialized, state-of-the-art equipment including remote sensing workstations and specialized data hardware for field research.

“This donation from Acadian Timber Corp. is very important for the School of Forestry and the Université de Moncton,” stated Jacques Paul Couturier, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of the Université de Moncton. “It will provide our students opportunities to further their knowledge in the area of forest management and help ensure they have the tools they need to enter the labour market. The generosity of Acadian Timber Corp. will also help us build our capacity in forestry research and innovation.”

“This is a big day for the School of Forestry,” added Madeleine Dubé, Vice-President of the Université de Moncton’s Edmundston campus. “This donation will help create new opportunities for our students and, over the longer term, help consolidate the School’s reputation among its forestry sector partners.”

“We need to continue to develop a well-educated workforce in the forest industry that is capable of bringing good ideas, high energy and strong leadership to a sector that constantly needs to adapt to new opportunities and challenges” said Mr. Ben Vaughan, chairman of Acadian Timber Corp.’s board.

The Evolution Fundraising Campaign aims to enhance excellence in research and development and in delivery of the student experience at the Université de Moncton. Under the auspices of this major fundraising campaign, the Université de Moncton has continued to expand its scholarship and bursary program—already one of the most generous and comprehensive in New Brunswick—to support its current students, grow its student population and promote graduate-level study.
