Highlights from the Board of Governors Meeting of June 8

Highlights from the Board of Governors Meeting of June 8
Adoption of the 2019-2020 budget

The Board of Governors has presented a deficit budget for the year 2019-2020. The projected deficit is a little over $1 million.

The decision of the provincial government to stop funding nursing programs explains this deficit budget. “To make up for this provincial funding cut, Université de Moncton management has had to increase its tuition fees, in addition to presenting a shortfall that has dramatically increased,” stated Jacques Paul Couturier, Interim President and Vice Chancellor.

The tuition of New Brunswick students enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program, in 2018-2019 or before, will increase by 2% and for all other students by 8%. Students in the Bachelor of Nursing program will have to pay additional program fees of $500, to help pay for their clinical training.

Despite this difficult financial context, the 2019-2020 budget includes strategic investments of $1.369 million aimed at improving the quality of teaching and support offered to students.

Université de Moncton management believes more than ever that it is important for governments and people to invest in post-secondary education, particularly university education.

“Université de Moncton currently offers lower tuition than the three public English-language universities of New Brunswick and a very competitive financial assistance program,” said Mr. Couturier. “Access to university studies remains one of our key priorities along with quality education.”

According to recent Statistics Canada figures, an investment in university education makes economic sense, both for people and governments.
