Promoting Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Research

The Université de Moncton has received a grant of around $100,000 per year for two years from the Government of Canada to strengthen the capacity for equity, diversity and inclusion in the research milieu.

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, announced the launch of Dimensions: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Canada, a pilot program inspired by the British initiative Athena SWAN, which is already recognized around the world. The Dimensions program will adopt a multidimensional approach to create a space where all members of the research environment can find their place and flourish.

The aim of the program is to break down systemic barriers, in particular those affecting underrepresented or disadvantaged groups such as women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities or racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2+ communities.

The funding application submitted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) in collaboration with the Human Resources Department is one of the 15 applications accepted out of 51 received from Canadian universities.

“When we take advantage of the skills of all members of the scientific community, not only do we stimulate innovation, but we make our university and our country more competitive,” indicated Francis LeBlanc, Associate Vice-President, Research, and Dean of the FGSR at the Université de Moncton. “This initiative opens the door to new opportunities for under-represented groups in Canadian research establishments. It is important to build an inclusive, highly diversified research environment where different points of view are considered and celebrated.”

Dimensions is supported by three federal research funding bodies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and the Humanities Research Council.
