Katryne Villeneuve and Maxime St-Cyr chosen athletes of the year at Université de Moncton

Hockey players Katryne Villeneuve, of Casselman, Ontario, and Maxime St-Cyr, of Saint-Didace, Quebec, were named female and male athletes of the year at the Moncton campus of the Université de Moncton for the 2018-2019 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) season.

The annual Athlete’s Gala, honoring the student-athletes, members of the nine Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus and Aigles Bleues teams, took place on Thursday evening at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Moncton. Edgar Robichaud, Administration and Human Resources Vice President, and Marc Boudreau, Athletic Director, attended to honor the athletes.

"It's great to see our athletes honored tonight," said Edgar Robichaud, Administration and Human Ressources Vice President. "They represent models of success and perseverance for our entire university community. Beyond their performances, our athletes are distinguished by their courage and team spirit. I am very happy to see them proudly representing the Université de Moncton throughout the year. "

Track and field athlete Kyla Hughes, of Cocagne, and hockey goaltender Étienne Montpetit, of Valleyfield, Quebec, were chosen as rookies of the year. The Coach of Year Award went to men’s hockey coach Judes Vallée.

Katryne Villeneuve was the AUS top point’s getter (36 points) and second in Canada and was the AUS top scorer (19 points) and second of U SPORTS. She was named MVP of the AUS women’s hockey conference. She was also a member of the AUS first all-star team and the second of U SPORTS. She was chosen player of the game and athlete of the week a number of times. She was a member U SPORTS Team Canada at the recent World university games in Russia, in early March, where the team netted the silver medal. She took 162 shots on goal (tops AUS) with five winning goals. In five seasons with the Aigles Bleues, she has 108 points with 53 goals and 65 assists in 102 regular season games. She is a bachelor of sport, recreation and tourism administration student.

Maxime St-Cyr was selected on the AUS first all-star team and was the AUS top scorer with 23 goals in 27 games. He was also ex-aequo U SPORTS top scorer. He finished the season with 9 assists and 32 points. He took 124 shots on goal and was +10. He was named athlete of the week twice at the Moncton campus. He is a determined and motivated athlete who had an immediate impact on the team in his first season. He is a bachelor of business administration (accounting) student.

Goaltender Étienne Montpetit left his mark on the team in his first season with the hockey Aigles Bleus. He was named AUS and U SPORTS rookie of the year and was named on both all-star rookie teams. He was also a member of the AUS first all-star team and U SPORTS second all-star team. He had the top save percentage of AUS goaltenders with .923 and first in AUS and U SPORTS with the number of saves, 793, having offered 66 goals in 25 games. He was an inspiration and was well appreciated by his colleagues. He is a business administration student.

Track and field athlete Kyla Hughes won a gold medal in the shot put and silver in the hammer throw at the AUS meet in February. She also won bronze at the annual McGill Challenge in Montreal. She was in the shot put competition at the U SPORTS championships in Winnipeg. She detains the Université de Moncton shot put record with a distance of 12m56. Kyla Hughes was a member of the AUS first all-star team. She is a bachelor of kinesiology student.

In his second season at the helm of the men’s hockey team, Judes Vallée saw his team qualify for the AUS playoffs after taking fifth spot in regular season with a 14 wins, 13 losses and three overtime losses record. The team had only managed three wins the previous season. Vallée was also named the AUS coach of the year by his peers.

The AUS James Bayer Award went to female hockey player Sarah-Ève Mailhot. The award is offered to an athlete who combines excellence in athletic, studies and leadership. She receives a $500 bursary.

Marie-Pier Corriveau, of Codiac FM, is this year's recipient of the Méridia Award for her interest and coverage of the Aigles teams and athletes. She did an excellent job of promoting the teams and various athletes at the student radio station.

The most valuable players of each team were also honoured at the Gala. They are Véronique Omalosonga and Jean-Luc Bastarache (track and field), Carol-Ann MacDonald and Nassim Bousmaha (cross country), Katryne Villeneuve and Étienne Montpetit (hockey), Monica Gallant and Jean-Michel Dako (soccer) and Pascale Doiron (women volleyball).

Athletic director, Marc Boudreau, gave an outline the year’s activities and thanked the coaches, athletes, support staff and sponsors for their commitment to the Aigles programs.
