Aigles Bleus Still Hopeful for Third Spot

The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (13-11-4=30 points, 4th position) will complete their regular schedule with two weekend road games in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey action in Nova Scotia.

Moncton plays the Acadia University Axemen (9-16-3=21 points, 6th position) on Friday in Wolfville and the Saint Mary’s University Huskies (18-9-1=37 points, 2nd position) on Saturday in Halifax.

Moncton is still looking to lock in third or fourth position in the final standings to gain home game advantage in the first quarterfinal 2 of 3 series. Aigles Bleus have a one-point lead over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (13-12-3=29 points, 5th position) and is three points behind the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men (15-10-3=33 points, 3rd position). Moncton has lost its last two games.

“We are still hopeful for a third-place finish, but we want the highest position possible,” Moncton coach Judes Vallée said. “The players all know the importance of the weekend. In our coach’s discussions, we aim to make sure the team is ready for the playoffs. We have been talking about this since the beginning of the regular schedule. We will take advantage of these two games to raise our level of play.”

“Our aim is to be as ready as possible for the playoffs and finish as high as possible,” added top scorer Maxime St-Cyr. “I may be the team’s highest scorer, but my first priority is the team. I will do what I can to help this team win. We had some tough games against these two, but we are capable if we play like real Aigles Bleus.”

Étienne Montpetit will be the goaltender. Maxime St-Cyr is the AUS top scorer with 22 goals and nine assists, with 31 points, tied in 6th spot in the AUS scoring title. Marc-Anthony Therrien will miss the two games because of an injury. Robbie Graham is 10th with 12 and 15, with 27 points. Étienne Montpetit has the top AUS save percentage with .924, allowing 60 goals and making 729 saves.
