The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (12-9-4=28 points, 3rd position) will host the Acadia University Axemen (7-15-2=16 points, 6th position) at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena at 7 p.m. on Saturday in an Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey game.

The Axemen are presently in a battle with the Dalhousie University Tigers for the sixth and final berth for the AUS playoffs. Coach Judes Vallée expects a solid game from the Axemen because the team is much better than in the first semester. Acadia has won its last two outings.

“We usually play well at home; we need to work as a team to win,” said defenceman Justin Guénette. “Some players are nursing small injuries and the week will not be easy with three games in seven days. I know we will do well defensively, with the play of goaltender Étienne Montpetit, which helps a lot. We played well in the first period on Wednesday for the first time in a long while and we will build on that. We realize the importance of the third spot in the standings and we aim to send a message to the other teams that we have our spot in the top 3.”

Coach Judes Vallée is aware of the challenges of playing three home games in seven days with a limited number of players. He really wants that third spot. “This really is an important game for us; we cannot let it go through our fingers, we need a win,” stated Vallée. “We did have difficulty against the Axemen this year, but we are playing better since a few games. The Axemen are battling for a spot in the playoffs, so I cannot stress enough the importance of this game for our team. The third spot opens the door to good things. Some players are injured, but we will do our best. Other players are stepping up and playing great and Montpetit is holding strong.”

Étienne Montpetit will be in nets. Marc-Anthony Therrien (injured) and Maxime St-Cyr (suspended), the team’s top scorers, will miss the game. Moncton has scored 82 goals and allowed 85 in 25 games compared to 59 and 87 for Acadia in 24 games.
